Founded in 1804, Kazan University is the second oldest classic university in the Russian Federation. An internationally acknowledged center of academic excellence, it is routinely listed among top 15 institutions of higher education in the country.

In October, 2009 the University received the high federal status. This became the logical continuation of the 205-year history of the development of Kazan University. KFU is a bright example of a classical university – source of fundamental knowledge and constant development.

The main center of higher education for a vast region, KFU today employs more than 3,200 faculty members and trains over 47,000 students (of them about 30,000 students in Kazan campus) who follow over 300 undergraduate and post-graduate degree programs.

Kazan University has been training international students since 1977. In these years more than a thousand graduates received KFU diplomas. At the moment over 1000 international students from 70 countries follow academic programs of the University, some of them learning Russian at the Preparatory faculty for foreigners.

The University has Preparatory school for International students, which teaches students in the fields of humanitarian, medical and biological, natural, engineering, technical and economic science.

The University carefully preserves the traditions of its world renowned scientific schools of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and linguistics. Presently KFU prioritizes research in the following areas: pharmacy and biomedicine, geology and petrochemistry, nanotechnologies and IT, physics, chemistry, psychology and cultural studies, humanitarian and pedagogic technologies, often taking advantage of interdisciplinary approaches.

KFU is the only Russian higher education institution which has enough housing units to accommodate all students who can choose from 26 comfortable dormitories.

KFU continues to serve as a leading national research center which is supported by 33 newly opened modern laboratories and five research sectors in Economics, Electrosynthesis of Aromatic Compounds, Applied Radiophysics and Applied Mathematical Modeling. State-of-the-art equipment has been bought for new research laboratories in physics), chemistry (6), biology (7), biomedicine (2), geology (6) and ecology (4).

Available scholarship programs:

Individuals who wish to study at a Russian university may apply for a scholarship from the Russian Government. A program set up by the Russian Federal government annually provides 15 000 scholarships to foreign students. Applications for Russian Federation scholarships providing for free education must be filed to the Ministry of Education Admissions Committee for Foreign Students. The final decision regarding granting personal allowance is made by the Special Federal Commission.

International students who receive the Russian Government scholarship receive a tuition waiver and a maintenance allowance of about RUR 1200 per month (RUR 1,500 for postgraduate students). They can also benefit from using a special dormitory rate (RUR 60 and 75 for undergraduate and graduate students, respectively). The student is responsible for medical insurance fees.
